EL PRIORAT

A destination with a taste of wine

There are destinations you discover with your eyes, and others you feel with your soul. The Priorat belongs to the latter.

In the heart of Tarragona, between rugged mountain ranges and vineyards on impossible terraces, lies a small region that is immense in essence. A land of wine, effort, and calm, where every bend in the road seems to lead toward authenticity.

Day 1: Falset and the heritage of wine

The journey begins in Falset, the capital and soul of the Priorat. A peaceful town with narrow streets, stone façades, and the unhurried rhythm of rural life. Here, wine is not just a product: it is a way of understanding the world.

The Falset-Marçà Cooperative, a Modernist work by Cèsar Martinell a disciple of Gaudí, is a must-see. Its brick structure and the aroma of must evoke the greatness of Catalan cooperativism.

From Falset, the road opens between hills covered with vineyards on the way to Gratallops, where some of the most prestigious wineries in the Priorat such as Álvaro Palacios, Clos Mogador, or Clos Erasmus craft world-renowned wines.

The llicorella (slate) slopes reflect the sunlight like broken mirrors, and the vineyards, planted on impossible terraces, tell stories of generations who tamed the rock to extract its essence.

A lunch among vineyards or in one of the local cuisine restaurants allows you to savor the simplicity of the Priorat: bread with olive oil, game meats, cured sausages, mushrooms, and, of course, a glass of dense, mineral wine.

Day 2: Between hanging villages and family wineries

The second day invites you to explore the region unhurriedly, along roads that wind between mountains. In Porrera or Torroja del Priorat, time seems to have stopped. Their cobbled streets and serene rhythm are the perfect counterpoint to the urban hustle. Here, the wineries are small and family-run, and each bottle carries the name and story of its maker.

Further north, in Escaladei, rise the romantic ruins of the Charterhouse of Santa Maria de Escaladei, the monastery that gave the Priorat its name. The Carthusian monks introduced viticulture in the 12th century, tracing the first wine routes in the region. Today, its broken arches and cypress trees frame a landscape that invites silence.

At lunchtime, nothing beats a local restaurant where the territory’s cuisine becomes a story: truita amb suc, rabbit with quince allioli, snails cooked in Priorat wine, or a mountain rice with mushrooms and sausage. Intense flavours, born from the land and crafted without artifice.

In the afternoon, the route can continue toward La Vilella Baixa, “the New York of the Priorat” due to its vertical houses, or toward the natural viewpoints of Montsant, where the sunset paints the landscape in copper and wine tones.

Day 3: Siurana and the nature of Montsant

The last day leads northward, where the landscape becomes wilder and more spectacular. Siurana, perched on a cliff, is one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia. Its cobbled streets, Romanesque church, and views over the reservoir are pure postcard. It was the last Muslim stronghold in Catalonia, and its legend can still be felt in every corner.

The area is also a paradise for lovers of sport and nature. Climbing, hiking, MTB, kayaking, or canyoning: the Priorat offers routes and experiences in the heart of the Montsant Mountain Range, a natural park that blends mysticism and verticality. The paths that climb to the hermitage of Our Lady of Montsant or the “graus” that scramble between cliffs are an invitation to get lost in order to find oneself again.

The return to Falset is peaceful. Between curves, vineyards, and stone, the landscape seems to bid farewell with the same calm with which it welcomed the traveler. The Priorat is not conquered; it is listened to, savored, and felt.
